Did you know that the whiteboard you’re writing on today might be made of Belgian steel? Together with Polyvision, ArcelorMittal developed an innovative steel solution for large enameled panels used in office buildings, schools, hospitals, transportation infrastructure, and public spaces. It’s a great example of how steel is part of our daily lives.
Larger panels, more freedom for designers
When you sketch an idea on a whiteboard in a conference room, you probably don’t realize that it’s made of high-quality steel. Yet enameled steel forms the basis of millions of whiteboards, information panels, building facades, and architectural applications.
Enameled steel has long since ceased to be merely the material used for display boards. Thanks to its sleek appearance, durability, and ease of maintenance, this steel is now finding its way into architecture, interior design, and public spaces worldwide as wall cladding and facade panels.
For these applications, Polyvision collaborates with ArcelorMittal Belgium, which produces a special cold-rolled steel grade in Ghent that, thanks to its exceptionally smooth and clean surface, is perfectly suited for enameling. Recently, the two companies even developed extra-wide steel coils measuring 1.52 meters, making it possible to produce larger and more seamless panels.
This innovation responds to a clear trend: “Architects and designers are increasingly opting for sustainable materials and a clean aesthetic featuring large, seamless surfaces.
