Technology that continues to challenge

Hannes started in the steel shop asa reliability engineer. His work revolves around preventing and resolving electrical malfunctions, as well as improving maintenance processes. "Every day brings something different," he says. "Sometimes I'm working on analyses and data, other days I'm out on the shop floor among the installations. That mix of brainwork and hands-on practice makes it incredibly fascinating."

What he values most is the chance to keep learning. “ArcelorMittal invests heavily in its people. I've already completed several internal and external training courses, including on electrical project work. That perfectly complements my mechanical background. Here, you have the freedom to develop yourself and discover where your strengths lie.”

“The best part about my job?Knowing that every day I contribute a little to a more sustainable world."

Working towards a greener steel industry

Hannes feels that he is contributing to a bigger story. "The steel industry is undergoing a major transition," he says. "We want to achieve climate-neutral production by 2050, and you can feel that in everything that happens here. Everywhere you look, you see projects focused on energy efficiency and sustainability. From smart motor controls to major investments in new technologies, each of us adds value.”

That focus on the future motivates him every day. "You can really feel that something is happening. We are working on solutions that reduce CO₂ emissions and make production greener. It's special to be part of that as an engineer. You know that your work today impacts the world tomorrow."

Growing and moving forward together

In addition to the technical challenges, Hannes also appreciates the collegial atmosphere. "There is plenty of room for collaboration here. As a young engineer, you get support from experienced colleagues, but you also get the opportunity to take initiative yourself. That trust motivates you to keep improving."

For Hannes, it is clear why he wants to continue building his career here. "You work in an environment where innovation, sustainability, and teamwork come together. No two days are the same, which keeps things fresh. What's more, you know that what you do really matters, not only for the company but also for the future."
