At ArcelorMittal Belgium, air quality has been a central focus of our environmental policy for decades. Thanks to targeted investments, our dust emissions are now only 6% of what they were in the 1990s.
We closely monitor our emissions through continuous measurements and strict controls. With our multi-year dust reduction plan, we invest in powerful dust extraction systems, innovative technologies, and preventative measures. In doing so, we actively contribute to a healthier environment for our employees and the surrounding community. Here are a few examples:
- New harbor cranes equipped with sprinklers and windshields to prevent dust from spreading during material handling activities.
- Construction of windshields along the Ghent-Terneuzen canal and the Kennedylaan, among other places, to limit dust nuisance in the surrounding area.
- Intensive cleaning programs for internal roads, ensuring that transport zones remain dust-free.
- Raw material stacks are given a protective layer of paper cellulose.
- Dust screens for better protection against wind erosion in the raw material parks.
- Modernization and expansion of filter installations and extraction systems in the blast furnaces and sinter plants to further reduce emissions.
- An advanced warning system linked to weather forecasts allows preventive measures to be taken in a timely manner.
