Accident in the coking plant of ArcelorMittal Gent

Ghent, 20 November 2017

On Monday November 20, at 15h10, an explosion took place in the by-products zone of the coke plant in ArcelorMittal Gent. The internal and external emergency services arrived on site. The accident resulted in one fatality and two injured who are both in a stable condition. Our deepest condolences go to the families, friends and colleagues of the victim and our thoughts are with the injured and their families.

We can confirm that there is no danger to the surrounding area and that the installation has been made safe. The coke plant gas is currently being flared in accordance with the stated procedures in these circumstances, creating visible flames above the coke plant that do not pose a danger.

ArcelorMittal is currently investigating the exact circumstances and causes of the accident and will provide more information as soon as possible.
