At ArcelorMittal Belgium, we strive for a sustainable balance between industry and nature. Biodiversity – the variety of plants, animals, and ecosystems – is essential for a healthy environment. That's why we're taking specific steps to protect and enhance nature on and around our sites.

Biodiversity research on our sites

In 2023, we partnered with an ecological engineering firm to conduct a comprehensive biodiversity study at our Ghent site. During six months, we cataloged the local plant and animal life, focusing on species groups such as birds, mammals, amphibians, and various plant and tree species. This was achieved through regular site visits and techniques like wildlife cameras, detectors, and amphibian traps.

Main result: 553 species of plants and animals observed

These insights help us to take targeted measures and avoid negative effects on biodiversity. They also provide us with the necessary understanding to focus on green integration that respects local biodiversity. Similar studies will follow for all our Belgian locations.

Some actions in the field

Bees at ArcelorMittal Gent

Bee Project

Since 2023, 4 bee colonies on our site in Ghent have been promoting greater biodiversity. Bees are essential for pollination and provide us with valuable information about the local plant life. They fly up to 3 km. We only harvest a small portion of the honey to ensure the bees are well-prepared for the winter.

At our site in Liège, bees also contribute to a healthy environment. There, they live in a Warré hive: a natural beehive made up of small, stackable sections where the bees can develop. The honey is left entirely for the bees, so they can manage their own supply.

Green space management

We are working on a biodiversity management plan to align our green space management with ecological principles.

Our policy and ambition

Biodiversity is firmly embedded in our environmental policy. We are committed to:

  • Respect protected nature within our sphere of influence.
  • Prevent and reduce negative impacts on biodiversity.
  • Communicating transparently about our efforts.

ArcelorMittal Belgium wants to be an example of how industry and nature can reinforce each other. Through research, cooperation and concrete actions, we contribute to a richer biodiversity and a more sustainable future.
