Handling of raw materials
ArcelorMittal in Gent produces steel from raw materials, such as iron ore and coal. Yearly, around 10 million tonnes of raw materials are shipped to our Ghent’ site via large vessels.
How does this work?
The department ‘raw materials, port, transport and road recuperation’ is our company’s logistic department. Here we unload the vessels and carefully divide the raw materials before stacking them in our raw materials stockyard. This process is executed by means of port cranes, stacker-reclaimers and an impressive network of conveyor belts.
This department is, in addition, also responsible for the transportation of hot metal from the blast furnaces to the steel shop and for the shipment of finished products.
Finally, it also contributes to our environmental achievements, as it re-utilises recuperation products and secondary raw materials.
