The European food industry takes up about half of the total amount of steel used in the packaging industry. One of the main reasons behind this is that most of the other types of packaging materials are not suitable for the sterilisation of food cans.

Another advantage of steel is that it is 100% recyclable. Each year, around 2.5 million tonnes of steel from the European food and drink packaging is recycled. Each recycled tin saves up to about one and a half times its weight in CO₂ emission.

Maybe you would not immediately expect it but when it comes down to product development, the packaging industry can be regarded as a very innovative environment. Not only do packages need to be functional, but the can manufacturers also want them to have unique and appealing shapes. Meal trays on the other hand, need to be suitable for microwaves, hot water baths and ovens.
